Is It Time For New Taxes In Massachusetts?

May 06, 2019

There's a debate on Beacon Hill about how to pay for improvements to public education and transportation.

A popular ballot measure would have brought an estimated $2 billion a year through a so-called "millionaire's tax." But the question didn't make it onto last year's ballot because state's highest court ruled the way it was written was unconstitutional.

Now, Republican Governor Charlie Baker is saying lawmakers should find other ways to invest in education and transportation.

But Senate President Karen Spilka, a Democrat, says the entire state tax code needs an overhaul — and that could include a version of the millionaire's tax or other increases.
